Police in Burundi have beaten and tear-gassed protesters in the capital who were demanding President Pierre Nkurunziza reverse a decision to run for a third term in office, a Reuters has reported.
At least eight people were arrested as the police tried to disperse the demonstration in Bujumbura on Tuesday, according to Reuters. Some protesters responded by throwing rocks at police ranks.

“People are on edge. They [protesters] seem to be planning something,” Mutasa said.
“We will not stop until he gives up the third term,” the protesters chanted in the flashpoint suburb of Nyakabiga.
“No to the coup, and no to the third term. We will continue until he says no to the third term,” one of the demonstrators, who gave his name as Jean-Paul, told Reuters news agency.

Migrants found by the BBC last week drifting off the coast of Thailand have been rescued by Indonesian fishermen.
A BBC reporter on the boat, first spotted last Thursday when it was stranded with a broken engine, says it is filthy and covered in insects.
It was one of many boats carrying thousands of Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants adrift in the Andaman Sea.
Amid a mounting humanitarian crisis, Malaysia and Indonesia have said they will offer migrants temporary shelter.
Foreign ministers from the two countries plus Thailand have been holding emergency talks in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpu Speaking after the talks ended, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said his country and Indonesia would stop towing the boats into other territories as navies have been doing in recent days.
He said we "need to assist these people" and that "because of the conditions they are experiencing we are willing to take them on to our shores
However, he said they would not actively search for migrants, only provide shelter if they came ashore, and then under the condition that the international community would help to repatriate or resettle them within a year.
Thailand was apparently not part of the announcement and has not yet commented.
'Towed out'
The migrant boat which arrived off Indonesia's northern Aceh province on Wednesday, was first spotted last on Thursday.
The migrants said they had been repeatedly towed out to sea by regional navies
Those on board told the BBC's Jonathan Head at the time that they had been abandoned by a people smuggler and had little food and water. The boat then went missing.
The migrants have now told activists they were towed out to sea three times by the Thai and Malaysian navies. They said they had been given food and water by Thai officials.
The BBC's Xinyan Yu, who is on board the trawler, says it is filthy and covered in bottles of pepper sauce, dirty plates and plastic bags of instant noodles. The smell is overwhelming she adds.
More than 400 people were rescued off Aceh on Wednesday. More than 2,000 people have now come to shore in that region alone.

The Governor of Borno state, Kashim Shettima says there are indications that missing Chibok girls might be living in Bunkers in Sambisa Forest with Boko Haram members. He called on the military to liberate the girls as they carry out their operations in the forest. The Governor gave the indication in a paper he wrote and was presented by the Secretary, Borno Elders Forum, Dr Bulama Mala at a two-day post election conference on security and governance, organized the GubioSavanna Centre, a Non Governmental Organisation, NGO, in Abuja yesterday May 19th. What he wrote after the cut..
"We are suspecting that Chibok girls are living with the insurgents in bunkers. I think the military must carry out their operations beyond the surface earth. They (Boko Haram) were also known to have dug tunnels to enable them move from house to house. So, having been left unchallenged for such a long time, such possibility cannot be ruled out which poses serious obstacles within the forest. The insurgents used their bases in the Sambisa Forest to launch deadly attacks and make quick retreat to their base which enabled them capture and take over control of all the local government areas bordering Nigeria with Cameroon, Chad and Niger, thus effectively cutting off the three neighbouring countries thereby declaring what they assumed was their independent territory (caliphate). Unless and only if the Sambisa Forest is effectively recovered from the terrorists shall we think of defeating the Boko Haram and begin to embark on a holistic approach for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North East. In fact, at several stages the Borno State Government had intervened to reconstruct destroyed schools, health centres, homes, markets and so on, only for the insurgents to attack and destroy them again."he said
