Nigerian-American Ike Opara has ended a five-match losing run by MLS side Sporting Kansas City after he netted the match winner at New York City, AfricanFootball.com reports.
Sporting Kansas City, who have not won since last year, are now third on the league table with five points from four games
The defender scored the only goal on Saturday in the 13th minute of the encounter when he powered home a header off Matt Besler’s long throw-in.
Opara has now scored two goals this season.
His compatriot JalilAnibaba was also on from start to finish for Sporting Kansas City.
In a related vein, Nigeria striker FernadoAdi scored Portland Timbers consolation goal in their 2-1 loss to Whitecaps.
The Nigerian striker scored what looked to have secured a point for the visiting team as he equalised to take the game to 1-1 in the 82nd minute, but a winner was scored by the host team in the added minute of the game.
